
General Information about Clark Park Recreation Center Visit - A World of Fun and Exciting in Philadelphia
Philadelphia in United States is known more for the excellent parks it has. One of the best in the lot is the Clark Park. A community green park with play ground as well as basketball areas, it contains the only known statue of Charles Dickens.
Clark Park is city owned park in Spruce Hill section of the Western part of Philadelphia city. The Park is located on the borders of 43rd and 45th Streets and also the Baltimore and Woodland Avenues. Clarence Howard Parker, the prominent banker of his time, established the park in the year 1894. During American Civil Wars, present location of the park was used by the Satterlee Hospital, a large Union Army hospital of the country. Today; only a small memorial reminds visitors that over 60,000 soldiers were treated in this hospital.
Prominent feature of the park is the "bowl" that originally was the mill pond fed by Mill Creek and at the same time covered by a cistern in the 1880s. Mill pond was originally used to power the factories at the Grays Ferry. Today there is basketball court, playground, open field, and multiple paths. It is also the home to its own resident Shakespeare Company.
An additional attraction in the park is the Farmer's Market. The market remains open on Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM May through thanksgiving. From Thanksgiving through April it remains open from 10 AM through 1 PM. Other attractions are the Uhuru Solidarity Movement run Flea Market from April to October and fall Youth Soccer tournament.
