What was once known as the League Island Park is now called the FDR or Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park, having acquired its name from the legendary former president of the United States. It is spread over a total area of 348 acres of which 146 acres comprises of a golf course, 125 acres consists of recreational areas and buildings and the rest 77 acres natural habitat covered by greenery and various water bodies.

The park is located about 40 miles from New York and offers its visitors huge amounts of open spaces to hold picnics and get in a day of relaxation. People also have the option of renting out these picnic places in advance. The pool at this park is one of the most well known all over the United States because of its immense size and its astounding ability to hold over 3500 swimmers at the same time.

The FDR Park has plenty of lakes and ponds that provide its visitors with excellent opportunities of fishing and boating. Some varieties of fish which one can catch at the park are sun fish, perch and bass. One must remember though that fishing is not allowed without a New York State Freshwater Fishing License.

Various rowboats and pedal boats are available on rent to the visitors. Any visitor who owns a regional boating permit can use his/her own canoe or rowboat and can even store it at an additional cost. During the winters, the various lagoons and lakes get frozen up and it proves to be a haven for ice fishermen and ice skaters.

FDR Skatepark Introduction

Built with voluntary donations, FDR Skatepark is located within FDR Park in South Philadelphia, near the South Philadelphia Sports Complex Pattison Avenue and Interstate 95. As the name suggests, it is a skatepark that occupies 16,000 sq feet of space. It hosted the Gravity Games of 2005. To fully enjoy FDR Skatepark, it is recommended that the visitors park themselves at a Philadelphia Pennsylvania hotel near the skatepark.

What are the attractions at and near FDR Skatepark? - FDR Boathouse-Built in 1914 and expanded as Russian Tea Room for the Sesquicentennial Exposition of 1926. It is now a boat rental facility and recreation pavilion.-FDR Gazebo-It offers an excellent view of the landscape. It is a popular picnic spot and looks very elegant with its buff masonry, red tile roof and blue Guastavino tile dome.-American Swedish Historical Museum-Located near the sports complex at 1900 Pattison Avenue, the American Swedish Historical Museum preserves and remembers the contribution of Swedish Americans in the country. There are 12 permanent galleries, a library and a changing exhibition gallery.-Edgewood or Meadow Lake-A Popular fishing spot. The common fish species found here are Bluegills and White Perch.-FDR Skatepark-It was constructed after skateboarding was stopped at LOVE Park near the city hall. It is one of best in the USA and has seen famous skaters like Brandon Novak, Bam Margera and Chuck Treece.-Other facilities-There is a cycling track that encircles the FDR Park. The southern part of FDR Park has the Ashburn Fields that hosts various collegiate and championship games. There are other baseball facilities in the northern part of the park. There are also various tennis courts. The Franklin D. Roosevelt golf course was started in 1940.
