The Philadelphia zoo is one of the oldest zoos in the world and is one of the best when it comes to breeding animals. They have an very successful breeding program for endangered species in captivity. When the zoo initially started in the year 1874, it had an entry fee of 25 cents and a grand total of 1000 animals.
The zoo is spread over 42 acres of land and currently houses over 1300 animals, amongst which are some of the most endangered and exceptional species in the world. The zoo authorities also work with many people to look after the likely environment of animals in their responsibility. Apart from this, there is a children's zoo, educational and interactive exhibits like educational and overnight camps for children, a rainforest themed carousel and a paddle boat lake.
The zoo remains open throughout the year except for Thanksgiving Day, December 24, 25, 31 and January 1. The timings of the zoo are 9:30 am to 5 pm and children under the age of 2 years are given free admission. Tickets are priced at $18 for adults while Children above 2 up till 11 are charged $15. Visitors to the zoo have ample amount of animals to look out for and they can even see some of their favorite animals like the big cats, giraffes, birds and langurs being fed by the zoo authorities. Visitors from out of town can take one of the guided tours for different types of animals provided at the zoo and even elderly people will not feel left out as there are wheelchairs and strollers on rent as well.
