What was once known as the League Island Park is now called the FDR or Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park, having acquired its name from the legendary former president of the United States. It is spread over a total area of 348 acres of which 146 acres comprises of a golf course, 125 acres consists of recreational areas and buildings and the rest 77 acres natural habitat covered by greenery and various water bodies.
The park is located about 40 miles from New York and offers its visitors huge amounts of open spaces to hold picnics and get in a day of relaxation. People also have the option of renting out these picnic places in advance. The pool at this park is one of the most well known all over the United States because of its immense size and its astounding ability to hold over 3500 swimmers at the same time.
The FDR Park has plenty of lakes and ponds that provide its visitors with excellent opportunities of fishing and boating. Some varieties of fish which one can catch at the park are sun fish, perch and bass. One must remember though that fishing is not allowed without a New York State Freshwater Fishing License.
Various rowboats and pedal boats are available on rent to the visitors. Any visitor who owns a regional boating permit can use his/her own canoe or rowboat and can even store it at an additional cost. During the winters, the various lagoons and lakes get frozen up and it proves to be a haven for ice fishermen and ice skaters.
