Washington Square Philadelphia

In 1682, there was a famous open space park in Philadelphia which was called the Southeast Square. Later on, the name was changed into Washington Square and up until now, this is one of the best tourist attractions in the city. This is one of the original five parks planned by the father of Philly, William Penn along with his surveyor, who was Thomas Holme. During the 18th century, Washington Square was used as the place where animals graze as well as a field for potters. Then it became a burial site for the African American community in the city especially during the Revolutionary War. After that, those people who have become victims of the yellow fever were buried here. This was the situation until the year 1815 when the improvements on the place began to take place.

The park's name was derived from George Washington. A monument was later proposed and the neighborhoods became more fashionable. When the year 1952 arrived, the renovation of the square began. Instead of the monument, they chose to build a tribute for the soldiers as well as the sailors who died during the Revolutionary War. Edwin Brumbaugh was the architect behind the masterpiece.

The monument is now known as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It is currently located within the Washington Square.
